Highway & Road Retroreflectivity Testing

Retroreflectivity Testing

Using a combination of vehicle mounted mobile equipment and portable handheld units, Skip-Line is available to capture retroreflectivity of all the markings on your highway network with data measured in millicandelas per meter squared per lux (mcd/m2/lux). Our equipment operates up to posted roadway speeds at a prescribed 30-meter geometry conforming to ASTM E1710. The data includes GPS reference points for location and is analyzed, summarized and reported in 0.1 mile increments.

Markings Inventory and Imagery

Using state of the art technology, in addition to retroreflectivity services, Skip-Line can simultaneously collect data regarding the type, location and quantity of markings in your highway network. This includes a condition assessment related to the condition of and reflectivity levels of the individual markings. Video imagery can be added as an additional option.

Quality Control/Quality Assurance

Skip-Line is able to provide testing services as needed for owners and contractors quality assurance for striping projects, regardless of size. Skip-Line is able to provide for initial testing as well as follow up testing as required in your project specifications. All of this information is available on the Spec-Rite Online software platform. Not only can Skip-Line provide current condition information, when retesting in the same location SRO can provide degradation models for your marking assets, allowing better decision making for asset management.

Friction Testing

In addition to our retroreflectivity program, Skip-Line can also provide friction testing for your highways and bridges. Using the latest equipment from SARSYS-ASFT, which measures in accordance with a number of different standards, such as ISP 8349, EN1436, ASTM E-2340, ASTM E-1551, ICAO Annex 14 & 15 and more. Skip-Line can measure and display all testing information using GPS technology within the Spec-Rite Online software platform, providing a one-stop shop for displaying and analyzing all your asset information.

Measuring Nighttime Retroreflectivity for Highways and Roads

Developing a program to measure nighttime retroreflectivity for highway markings is a critical component to highway safety.
Markings that do not reach minimum standards cannot be seen at night.

What is Retroreflectivity?

In a nutshell, retroreflectivity has to do with how well you can see road markings at night. Reflective pavement markings reflect the light from the vehicle’s headlight back at the driver. It is accomplished by adding glass beads to highway markings during the application process. The higher the retroreflectivity number the better one can see the markings at night. Many DOT’s and government agencies set minimum retroreflectivity numbers in order to ensure work is completed to the highest standards. Measuring the markings over time and monitoring deterioration is a key component in developing an asset management program for your highway markings.

Skip-Line's Approach to Highway Markings

The Skip-Line team works with government agencies to set and review minimum standards.   Skip-Line can work with municipalities to measure new work performed by highway crews and outside markings contractors to ensure new application meet standards.  We can also measure entire road systems quickly and efficiently to determine overall retroreflectivity levels.   This information can be used to schedule upcoming maintenance.

Skip-Line has the best equipment in the industry to measure retroreflectivity.  Skip-Line exclusively uses Delta retroreflectometers to measure retroreflectivity.

Delta’s LTL-M measures the retroreflection of pavement markings continuously with a measurement width up to 3.3 feet. It can measure double lines simultaneously, reports individually and records the geometry of the markings. LTL-M in addition records the presence of raised pavement markers (RPM).

All of the measurements are available to the client on our patent-pending Spec-Rite Online platform.  On the platform you can do the following:

  • Review the results on our GPS platform.
  • Review video/pictures of the markings
  • Predictive Maintenance Modeling
  • Work Flow Management
  • Budget Forecasting
